3rd Class March/ April 2022
We have had a very busy few weeks in school recently and we have had lots of exciting things going on in our classrooms.
English:
We learned all about procedural writing and how to write a set of instructions. We chose our own topic to write about such as a recipe, or how to play a game. Pupils produced some really amazing pieces of writing. We also had some fun writing about how to catch a leprechaun.
We explored some shape poetry which was lots of fun. We then created our own poems in our chosen shapes. Our teachers were really impressed with everyone's amazing poems!
We had lots of fun learning a new tongue twister every week and we have been busy practising them and saying them super quickly!
Gaeilge:
Bhíomar ag staidéar an téama Éadaí agus An Cháisc le déanaí.
Bhí an-suim ag na páistí sna ceachtanna agus bhain siad an taitneamh as na gníomhaíochtaí éagsúla.
Bhí seachtain na Gaeilge againn freisin idir 1-17ú Márta agus bhí a lán eachtaí ar siúl againn ar scoil. Bhí an ‘Pop-Up Gaeltacht’ againn sa halla agus bhí an spórt agus spraoi ag gach duine ann.
Maths:
We have been studying lots of different topics in maths recently.
We started with the topic of length and we learned how to estimate the length of different items and then we used different apparatus such as rulers, metre sticks and measuring tapes to measure the various lengths of items. We had lots of fun guessing then measuring and seeing how close we were to the answer. We used language such as metre, centimetre, m, cm, shorter than, longer than, shortest, longest.
We then moved onto 3D shape which is also a really fun topic. We identified 3d shapes in our classroom environment and in our homes. We looked at the different properties and characteristics of each 3D shape. We investigated how many faces, sides/edges, corners/vertices each shape had.
We also linked the topic of area in with the topic of length so this worked really well as we now know how to find the area of a given shape or space. We drew 1 metre squared out on the playground using chalk and we also made it in our classrooms using paper. We investigated the area of different items in our classroom too. We had lots of fun!
Finally we looked at lines and angles. We explored the different types of lines such as vertical, horizontal, diagonal and parallel and looked at what types of lines were in our classroom. We then looked at angles and learned about right angles and we explored whether some angles were greater than or less than right angles.
Other Subjects:
In Geography we learned all about Australia. We looked at some famous Australian landmarks and learned some really interesting facts about Australian culture. We tied in some of our artwork with the Australian theme and we created some beautiful dot paintings of Australian animals and we also designed some beautiful 3d replicas of the Sydney opera house.
In History we learned all about the Ancient Egyptians and how they lived. We explored some ancient artefacts that were found in tombs and learned all about King Tutankhamun. We learned some really interesting facts about the Great Pyramids of Giza too! We created some beautiful Egyptian Pyramid silhouette sunset pictures in art also.
In Science, we were lucky enough to go on a beautiful Nature walk in Glenart wood with Patrick Hunt. We had lots of fun and learned lots of new information about plants and animals in the woods.
S.P.H.E:
We have been covering the stay safe programme and learning about the different types of bullying and how to prevent and deal with bullying situations. We also learned about the different kinds of touches and identified which are good and which are bad. Finally we covered the topic of secrets and discussed what kind of secrets are good secrets and what ones are bad. The stay safe programme also talks about strangers and how to deal with situations where there are strangers. The stay safe motto is really important ‘SAY NO, GET AWAY, TELL!’
P.E: We have been lucky enough to have two coaches with us over the past two months. We spent some time in Arklow tennis club learning lots of new skills in tennis and we had a great time! We also had some G.A.A coaching and everyone has really enjoyed these sessions.
All the third class teachers are really delighted with how hard everyone has been working over the past two months and would like to say well done to everyone! We are all looking forward to the next two months in school as we have lots of exciting things coming up!
