3rd Class-November/December

We have been really busy in school the last two months. Our teachers are so proud of all our hard work to date! Have a read and look through the work we have done during the months of November and December.

English

During the months of November and December we have been making visualisations during our Guided Reading lessons. This is a really important comprehension strategy as our five senses (touch, taste, smell, hear and see) really help us when we are reading.

We have been paying particular attention to using punctuation in our writing, especially the use of capital letters and full stops. During our Guided Reading lessons we have been trying to identify nouns, adjectives and verbs in our books. This has proven to be a fun task as we are trying to find as many as possible during our grammar lessons!

Writing:

At the beginning of November we began learning about report writing and how this writing genre is structured. We have looked at many examples of reports, with animal reports being the most popular!

During our English writing lessons, we have been learning about reindeer! We are currently in the process of publishing our reindeer reports and they will be such an interesting read! We also learned that reports have a particular structure and we will ensure to follow this structure when we are publishing our reindeer reports:

  • Title – Names the thing
  • Classification – Tells what the thing is
  • Description – Tells what the thing has and what it looks like
  • Location – Tells where the thing is or is found
  • Dynamics – Tells what the thing can do

We are currently working on our oral language skills both in class and on the yard. We are paying particular attention to speaking clearly and maintaining eye contact with others. Our teachers have noticed that we are gaining more confidence in speaking in front of others too!

We really enjoy learning new poetry and learning some actions to help us remember the lines. Below are an example of two poems that we have learned since returning to school after the mid-term break:

  • The Alien by: Julie Holder
  • Christmas Dog by: Shel Silverstein

Gaeilge

Táimid ag obair go dian as Gaeilge ag caint faoi An Scoil, Bia agus An Nollaig.

Táim in ann na ceisteanna seo a fhreagairt anois:

  • Cén rang ina bhfuil tú? Táim i rang a trí.
  • An bhfuil aige/aici? Tá/Níl aige/aici.
  • An é? Is/Ní é.
  • Ar thit? Thit/Níor thit.
  • Tá ar an gcrann/in aice leis an gcrann/ar an talamh.
  • An bhfuil sa chuisneoir/sa chófra? Tá/Níl sa chuisneoir/sa chófra.
  • Is maith liom./Is fuath liom./Is aoibhinn liom.
  • Tá … ar an gcrann Nollag.
  • Nollaig shona duit/daoibh.
  • Tá a lán foclóir nua againn freisin, mar shampla: cóipleabhar, peann luaidhe, siosúr, gliú, crián, páipéar, scriosán, bricfeasta, lón, dinnéar, feoil, iasc, torthaí, glasraí, bainne, uisce, gránach, muifín, ubh, uachtar reoite, réalta, coinneal, bronntanas, réinfhia, soilse, drualas, stoca Nollag.

Maths

During the months of November and December we have continued to learn our multiplication and division tables. To date, we know our 2’s, 4’s and 8’s. We began exploring the topic of fractions and we were able to make the link between our tables and halves, quarters and eighths! We have enjoyed learning about the fraction wall and equivalent fractions too!

Other subjects

In our history lessons we read a few variations of the myth ‘The Salmon of Knowledge.’ We created our own story map showing the main events that happened in this myth. In our science lessons we learned all about our breathing system and how amazing our lungs are. During the month of December in our geography and history lessons, we are currently learning about Christmas traditions all around the world. It is so interesting to learn about the wonderful ways in which other cultures celebrate Christmas. It is also very interesting to hear that every family has their own way of celebrating Christmas too!

During the month of November in our art lessons we enjoyed using clay! We made our very own clay fish and decorated them with sequins. These clay fish represented ‘The Salmon of Knowledge.’ We also made our own clay pinch pot monsters and painted them using acrylic paint! During the month of December we have been focusing on Christmas themed art which has included aerial view snowmen and snow globes.

We hope you enjoy looking through some of our wonderful work!

Well done to all of the children in 3rd class for working so hard during the months of November and December. Keep it up!

We would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Ms. Murphy, Ms. Rowley, Ms. L. Doyle and Ms. Woodbyrne :)
