3rd class are delighted to be back in school! The children are tackling all tasks and challenges with such enthusiasm! The children are making a great effort in all aspects of school and are ready to complete the final term on a high note!
English
Writing
When we returned to school in March, 3rd class began their first narrative writing draft of 'The missing...'. Following weeks of editing and re-drafting, the children have published their final piece of work. 3rd class have proved that hard work really does pay off as all narratives are a fantastic read, some having the reader sitting on the edge of their seat wondering if the missing... will ever be found!!
Reading
In our guided reading lessons, we have been working on the comprehension strategies of clarifying and questioning. Since we returned to school in March, we have been focusing on the importance of asking questions when we are reading. We learned that by asking questions, it helps us to focus on what we are reading and to learn more about the characters/topic that the book is about. We also discovered that there are three different types of questions; here, hidden and head. We learned the difference between each question and practised asking and answering each one.
Oral language
3rd class have been preparing their oral language topic since we returned to school in March. These topics have varied from space to The Vikings to famous sports stars. The children will be presenting their work to small groups in class in the coming weeks.
Our oral language theme for the month of April was giving and following instructions. In class, we played a variety of games suited to this topic such as; locate the object and treasure map. We discovered how important it is to give clear instructions!
Gaeilge
Ba é 'Siopadóireacht' agus 'Éadaí' na téamaí a bhí againn i rith mí an Mhárta agus Aibreáin.
Anois, táimid in ann na ceisteanna agus na habairtí seo a fhreagairt:
- An féidir liom cabhrú leat?
- Ba mhaith liom...a cheannach.
- Cheannaigh mé...sa...
- An raibh...air/uirthi?
- An bhfaca tú an...?
Maths
Since returning to school in March, 3rd class have launched straight back into learning their tables-both division and multiplication. Every week the children make a great effort in the tables games, which proves that they are trying so hard to learn and revise their tables! Well done!
3rd class were very active during some of their maths lessons, in which they were busy measuring the length of a variety of items using rulers, metre sticks and trundle wheels! Some children were amazed at how accurate their estimation was before they even started measuring some items!
During the month of April, 3rd class have made a great effort in getting to grips with fractions and decimals. We have been using fraction walls, number lines and our division tables to help us with these two topics!
Other subjects
Our history, geography, science and art lessons over the last few weeks have all been based on Egypt!
In history we learned all about Egypt's fascinating past which dates back as far as 2500 BC! From The Great Pyramid to Tutankhamun, we learned so much about this incredibly historic country!
In geography, we identified where Egypt is on the map and learned how important the Nile River was to the people of Egypt. The Nile River provided food, washing facilities and even flax which was used to make clothing!
In science, we learned about the importance of our skeleton and how it allows us to move! We identified where each bone is in our body and learned that an adult has less bones than a baby! We completed a very interesting science experiment in which we discovered how important it is to include dairy products in our diet.
Take a look at the pictures to see the wonderful work from 3rd class, especially our art work which linked in with our topic of Egypt!
Well done 3rd class! Keep up the amazing work!
