3rd class have settled in wonderfully into their new home at St. John’s S.N.S and have done some trojan work over the first few weeks of term.
Have a read below to see what we have been learning about since returning to school in September.
English
3rd class have really been enjoying their guided reading lessons this term. We have been focusing on making predictions and connections – two great skills that good readers use every time they pick up a new book! We have also been revising when to use capital letters and full stops and making every effort to use these in all of our sentences.
The genre of recount writing has been the focus of our writing lessons this term and we have had loads of fun exploring this type of writing. We read a great recount example based on ‘A Trip to the Zoo.’ We have been busy bees planning and drafting our very own pieces of recount writing and look forward to publishing our very first piece of writing after the mid-term break.
We have been using the following structure when writing our recounts:
- Title – tells us what the piece will be about
- Orientation – tells us who, when, where and what happened
- Events – what happened in chronological order
- Ending – summing up what happened
In our oral language lessons, we have been learning the important skills needed to become great speakers and great listeners. In particular, we are working on using eye contact, speaking clearly and taking turns when speaking in groups. We have also been practicing reciting some wonderfully tricky tongue twisters. Some examples of the tongue twisters we have enjoyed so far are:
- The thought I thought wasn’t the thought I thought I thought
- Cooks cook cupcakes quickly
Gaeilge
Táimid ag obair go dian as Gaeilge ag caint faoi Mé Féin, an Fómhar agus Oíche Shamhna.
Táim in ann na ceisteanna seo a fhreagairt anois:
- Cad is ainm duit? _____ is ainm dom.
- Cé tusa? Is mise ____.
- Cén aois thú? Tá mé ___ mbliana d’aois.
- Cá bhfuil tú i do chónaí? Tá mé i mo chónaí sa/i_____.
- Can rang ina bhfuil tú? Táim i rang a trí.
- Cé mhéad duine atá i do chlann? Tá _____ i mo chlann.
- Cén dath atá ar do chuid shúile? Tá súile ___ agam.
- Cén dath atá ar do chuid gruaige? Tá gruaig ___ orm.
Tá a lán foclóir nua againn freisin, mar shampla: iora rua, iora liath, damhán alla, duilleoga, cnónna, bord dúlra, sionnach, broc, cailleach, vaimpír, gealach, réaltaí, púca, cnámharlach, sciathán leathair, puimcín, tine cnámh, bob nó bia.
Maths
3rd class have been working so hard on the topics of place value, adding big numbers, subtracting big numbers, 2D shapes and multiplication over the last two months. We had great fun going on a shape hunt around the school and creating some spooky scenes and characters using 2D shapes before the mid-term break. All of the 3rd class teachers are so impressed with the work and effort all students have been putting into their maths work.
Other subjects
In other areas, we studied the topic of Transport in our history lessons. We were particularly surprised by the first car, first train and first plane ever made. We had great fun imagining what the transport of the future might look like. We took some inspiration from the poem ‘Flying Machine’ by Hilda Offen.
In our science lessons, we studied the human skeleton and were intrigued to learn that without our skeleton, humans would be no more than a blob of jelly! We also learned about the importance of our spines and how to take care of our bones.
Congratulations to all of the children in 3rd class who made their First Holy Communion in October. This special sacrament was really enjoyed by all.
3rd class really took advantage of ‘spooky season’ this year and created some gorgeous Halloween-based art work. We also studied some Halloween music, two of our favourite songs were Witch Doctor and Ghostbusters!
Check out the pictures below to see a selection of our fabulous work.
Keep up the fantastic work rang a trí.
