Facts about The Nile River
- The Nile River is found in northeast Africa. It has been recognised as the longest river in the world measuring approximately 6,695km in length!
- The Nile flows through 11 countries: Tanzania, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan and Egypt.
- This amazing river has two main tributaries (or smaller rivers or streams) which meet to form The Nile. These smaller rivers are called The White Nile and The Blue Nile.
- The Blue Nile and White Nile merge in Khartoum, which is a city in Sudan. The Nile continues to flow north and finally into the Mediterranean Sea.
- The Nile was a very important resource for the Ancient Egyptians as they depended on it for food, water and as a way to travel from one place to another.
- Every year, usually in August, The Nile flooded which resulted in very fertile ground along the river banks. This ground was perfect for planting and growing crops.
- The Nile doesn't flood anymore because the Aswan High Dam was built in 1970. This dam controls the river flow in order to produce electricity, water farms and provide sufficient drinking water to homes.
- Approximately 95% of Egyptians depend on water from The Nile to live.
- A huge variety of wildlife depend on the river and its banks to live, such as turtles, snakes, hippos and The Nile Crocodile!
- 'Wafaa an-Nil' is a two week holiday that the Egyptians celebrate in August every year. This holiday is to mark an important event which allowed their country to grow!
