4th Class - November/December

20-December-21
4th Class - November/December

What a busy and exciting few months it has been for 4th class! Everyone has been working extremely hard and we are looking forward to a well-deserved break over the Christmas holidays.

English

During our guided reading sessions, we have been focusing on the comprehension strategy of visualising. This comprehension strategy involves creating pictures in our minds of what we are reading. 4th class have been reading some very interesting novels and PM readers and are looking forward to starting new ones next term.

We not only used visualising in our guided reading, but also to help us write some amazing acrostic winter poems and senses poems based on the various things that we see, hear, smell, taste and touch during the winter/ Christmas time. We learned all about adjectives as well which really helped us to write some wonderful, descriptive poems!

We continued to work on report writing in English also. We got the chance to research an animal of our choosing, gather information about that animal, write a report about the animal and then present it to the class while also focusing on using our oral language skills. We loved listening to each other’s reports and learning about all the different animals. We enjoyed our report writing based on animals so much that we decided to do another report based on a country of our choosing and followed the same process. It was really interesting learning all about the traditions and culture of other countries.

We have been continuing to work on our cursive writing. Some children even received their pen licences this term!

Maths

4th class have covered lots of different maths topics over the past couple of months!

We started with data and length in November. We enjoyed gathering data, analysing the data and presenting the data in the form of bar charts and bar line graphs in data. We thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on learning in maths when learning all about length. We looked at the metric units of centimetres, metres and kilometres. We were even introduced to fractions and decimals within length!

We moved onto long multiplication. After plenty of practise, we are proud to say that we have grasped long multiplication! We will continue to work on this throughout the year, but our teachers are so proud of our persistence throughout this challenging topic!

We finished off learning all about money! We started off learning how to convert cent to euro and vice versa, and then moved on to adding and subtracting money. We learned how to calculate change as well which is such an important skill. We have become very money-savvy in 4th class.

Other subjects

In History, we learned all about Medieval Castles. We were then tasked with creating our own Medieval Castle. We worked really hard for 3 weeks creating our Medieval Castles at home and once they were complete, we presented them to our class.

In Geography, we learned all about Christmas around the world and about all of the different traditions and customs in other countries. It was interesting to compare the Christmas traditions of many different countries to the customs that we have here in Ireland.

In music, we listened to and completed listening activities based on popular songs from Christmas movies such as Home Alone, The Polar Express and The Grinch!

In PE, we learned and practised our passing and dribbling skills in basketball and worked our way up to playing some basketball matches. We could definitely give LeBron James a run for his money with our impressive basketball skills!

Finally, in art, we created some magnificent Christmas decorations from clay. Check out the pictures below to see some of our other amazing winter/ Christmas themed artwork! Walking through the corridors in school is like walking through an art gallery!

Ms Coburn, Ms Hurley, Ms Byrne, Ms Doyle and Ms Kinsella would like to say a massive well done to all of 4th class for their hard work and persistence the past two months.

We would like to wish all of 4th class, their families and everyone else a very Merry Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year!

See you all in 2022 for some more learning and fun!
