English

4th class really have enjoyed practising their tongue twisters and have also improved greatly. We tried some tongue twisters such as ‘four furious friends fought for the phone’, ‘If you notice this notice, you will notice that this notice is not worth noticing’ and ‘Silly Sally swiftly shooed seven silly sheep.’
We are working hard on our oral language skills in class and have presented to our class our favourite book or item in Show and Tell. We are making sure to remind ourselves of using good eye contact, speaking clearly and also using full sentences.
Within Guided Reading we developed the comprehension skill of declunking. The children reread the word to break it up into sounds/prefixes/suffixes/checking to see if they recognise any part of the word/ rereading the sentence with the word and the sentence after the word. It’s a great skill to have!
Learning the poem ‘Please Mrs. Butler’ was also a hit with the children. We discussed the structure of the poem, specifically the effect of the use of rhyme.
We discussed the way the poet has organised the poem into sections which develop or move on the 'story' of the poem;
We discussed the feelings of the characters in the poem, and how we infer from the poem the changes in their feelings.

Maths

We looked at many topics in maths the last two months. We began with Capacity where we estimated, recorded, measured and recorded capacity using the appropriate metric units; litres and millilitres. We worked hard on our problem solving and need to remember to always use the RUCSAC rule when dealing with problems as it will help us solve them. The topic of Chance was most enjoyable and gave everyone the opportunity to discuss various outcomes such as; What is the chance of it raining today?
The children used vocabulary of uncertainty and chance: chance, likely, unlikely, never, definitely to explain their reasoning. Other topics we also looked at in maths were Area and Weight.
4th class teachers would just like to remind everyone to keep learning their tables each night.

Other Subjects

In Art we included a World Book Day lesson where we used our favourite book as a stimulus. We drew ourselves reading the book and they all turned out really cool! We also created some St. Patricks Day art too and recreated a pot of gold paper plate! The children also created amazing Easter bunnies also too!

SESE

In Science we learned about the lifecycle of a butterfly in great detail and are looking forward to having caterpillars visit our classroom after the Easter break. In Geography we learned the names and locations of the main rivers and lakes of Ireland. The children also located these rivers and lakes on a map of Ireland. We understood and used new vocabulary such as; source, tributary and estuary. In History we read about North American people in particular about the lives of Native American Sioux tribe. We all enjoyed our heritage walk with Patrick Hunt. Patrick was so knowledgeable about foraging as well as learning about plants and trees.
