4th Class - November/December
It has been a very busy few months for 4th class and everyone has been working extremely hard. We are really looking forward to a well deserved break for Christmas!
English
We have been working on making connections in our guided reading where we practised making text to self, text to text and text to world connections. We have also been working on our strategy of visualising using our five senses.
We also brought this strategy into our poetry where we wrote some fantastic winter and Christmas acrostic poems based on what can see, smell, hear, touch and taste at this time of year. We made sure to use lots of adjectives to make our poems lovely and descriptive. We also really enjoyed a new poem by Kenn Nesbitt called ‘Hip Hop Santa.’
In our writing, we have been focusing on the persuasive writing genre. We have been looking at the structure and style of language used in this genre. We have enjoyed reading some examples of debates, participating in walking debates and writing some debates of our own.
We have also been working extremely hard on our cursive handwriting and some children even earned their pen licenses over the past few weeks.
Maths
We have worked very hard in maths over the past few months and we have covered lots of new topics.
We started with division in November, where we looked at different methods of division and practised our problem solving skills. We also really enjoyed learning about the topic of data where we began by analysing data, looking at different methods of representing data (e.g. block charts, bar charts, bar line graphs and pie charts), gathering data and representing the results of the data we found.
In December, we explored length where we looked at the units of measurement, converting lengths into centimetres, metres and kilometres and also working with these units in fraction and decimal form. We really enjoyed the hands-on activities of measuring different objects in our classroom and school environment. Finally, we covered the topic of money which is a great topic at Christmas time as we were all doing our Christmas shopping. We began by learning how to convert cent to euro and vice versa. We then practise how to add and subtract money and learned how to estimate and calculate our change. We also worked very hard at real life problem solving and the teachers were very impressed with how hard everyone worked at this.

Other subjects
In science, we learned all about the food pyramid and the different food groups. We also looked at how important it is to have a balanced diet.
In history, we learned all about medieval castles and looked at different examples of these castles in Ireland and other countries. We then had a project where everyone created their own medieval castle at home using recycled materials. It was amazing to see the standard of work that everyone had put into their projects when we all got to bring them into school.
In geography, we learned all about Christmas traditions around the world. It was very interesting to compare how different countries have their own customs and to compare them to how we celebrate Christmas here in Ireland.
In art, we made some amazing clay Christmas decorations. Please take a look at the pictures below to see some of our other wonderful winter/ Christmas themed artwork.
Finally, in music and drama we all put in a huge amount of work for our Christmas plays. We all rehearsed our lines, songs and dance moves over the past few weeks and it was wonderful to display all of our hard work for our parents on the last week of school before the holidays. We also enjoyed a lovely hot chocolate treat while watching the panto.
Ms. Ryan, Ms. Byrne, Mr. Cavaliere and Ms. Kavanagh would like to say a big well done to everyone for all of their hard work over the past few weeks. Keep up the super work! J
We would like to wish all of 4th class, their families and everyone else a very Merry Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year for 2023!
