4th Class October

October

4th class have been working very hard over the month of October.

Here is an overview of everything we have been learning this month:

English

Reading:

We have continued to work hard at making predictions during our guided reading. We are very impressed with the first few chapters in our novels and cannot wait to see what unfolds further on in the stories. We will then be able to go back and check if our original predictions were correct r if we would like to change our predictions when we find out more about our novels. We have also been making connections to our novels and look forward to learning more about making connections after the Halloween break.

Writing:

4th class have been working hard on Report Writing this month. We learned all about the kind of language that you use and the features involved. We read and examined some interesting reports on some animals and events. We collaboratively came up wrote a report on an animal and have also been working on writing our own reports on animals.

The structure of a piece of Report Writing is:

  • Title
  • Classification
  • Description
  • Location
  • Dynamics

Oral Language:

We have really enjoyed attempting and practicing our tongue twisters this month (‘Betty Botter bought a bit of butter but the butter was bitter, so Betty bought better butter to make the better butter better.’ and ‘Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers’) in our oral language lessons. We especially liked challenging ourselves, seeing who could say them the fastest.

We have been working on our active listening skills whilst listening to New2day. We watch News2day and use our active listen to try to hear some main points that we can report orally back to the class.

We studied the poem ‘Halloween is Nearly Here’ by Kenn Nesbitt. We had great fun looking at the poetic techniques used and using expression when saying the poem.

Maths

4th class have been working really hard learning all about multiplication and division. We have made great progress with these over the month of October and have also made some great work on our tables. We have enjoyed playing our tables games at the beginning of our maths lessons.

Gaeilge

Ba é ‘Sa Bhaile’ an téama a bhí againn i nGaeilge i rith mhí Deireadh Fómhair.

Táimid in ann comhrá a dheanamh agus na ceisteanna seo a fhreagairt:

  • Cá bhfuil tú i do chónaí?
  • Tá mé i mo chónaí i mbungaló/ dteach scoite/ dteach leath-scoite/ detach dhá stór/ in árasán.
  • Cónaím i _____.
  • Tá an teach suite ______.
  • Nuair a _______.
  • Cá bhfuil an teach suite?

Other subjects

In our geography lessons we have been learning all about the water cycle. We learned the four stages of the water cycle; evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection. We decided it would be an interesting experiment to see if we could grow a garden in a jar and see the water cycle unfold before our eyes. We planted seeds in a jar, added water, sealed the jar and placed the jar in sunlight. Some of our classes are delighted to see some growth in our jars and we are patiently anticipating what will have grown over the break. We have really been enjoying athletics and GAA in our PE as we have been practising our running, jumping, throwing and catching skills. We have also loved getting creative in our art lessons and have made some lovely autumnal works of art along with some spooky silhouette art and some colourful spider webs!

Take a look and see the wonderful work we have completed in 4th Class

Well done and keep up the fantastic work 4th Class!

Wishing a lovely and safe Mid-Term Break to all.

Mr. O'Connor, Ms. Byrne, Ms. Rees, Ms. Coburn and Ms. Hurley
