4th class have had a great first few months and have settled well into their new classrooms as well as enjoying getting to know their new teachers. Here is a little glimpse into what they have gotten up to over the last few months.
English
We started off the year reviewing and revisiting our skills of narrative writing. We learned how to:
- Create good orientations which give us a good visualisation of where and when our stories take place as well as who is in them.
- How to describe people and places in a manner which brings them to life in the mind of the reader.
- How to link events together and work towards a conclusion.
- How to conclude our narratives and solve the problems our characters faced.
We then published these narratives and we all ended up with our own published stories which we added illustrations to.
Gaeilge
Bhíomar ag foghlaim ar gach rud faoi muid féin. D’fhoglamaimid conas na ceisteanna seo a freagair:
- Cad is ainm duit?
- Cé tusa?
- Cén aois thú?
- Cá bhfuil tú i do chónaí?
- Can rang ina bhfuil tú?

Maths
Over the last few months we have reviewed what we knew about place value and then moved on to learn about 2D shapes. We went on a shape hunt around the school and when we moved on to 3D shapes we even made some out of matchsticks and blu tack. We worked so hard to learn how to do long multiplication too and have been practising this a lot in order to get very good at doing this new skill for us.
Other Subjects
In our other subjects we have learned about the water cycle in depth, and put it to the test by creating gardens in jars in our classroom, in these jars we created mini water cycles!
We learned about teeth too and the various effects of different drinks on our teeth. We did an experiment to learn this where we used eggs in different drinks to determine the effect of each of these drinks on our teeth! This works because egg shells are made of the same enamel our teeth are made of. We tested this with Coca-Cola, Fanta, water and milk.
We also learned some Irish folklore in the story of Setanta as well as how Halloween originated in ancient Ireland with the Celtic festival of Samhain.
In P.E. we were lucky to have Barney come in and do some rugby training with us.
In art we enjoyed learning about the colour wheel, making hot air balloons, picasso portraits and Halloween style nighttime silhouettes!
