- Farm Boy
- Friend or Foe

The reading strategy we focused on was visualiing. Visualising uses prior knowledge and experiences to create a mental image from what is happening in a text.. It brings a text to life and engages the imagination.
We took part in activities such as:
- Drawing images in response to guided reading
- Created mental images in response to guided reading
- Discuss in detail the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touch of their image
- Compare own image to others
Writing
We learned about recount writing. A recount is the retelling or recounting of an event or an experience.
Each recount text follows these steps:
- Title
- Orientation
- Events
- Ending
The students created excellent recount pieces about their St Patricks Day, Easter break and much more.
We created our own Limericks for St Patricks Day. A limerick is a five-line poem that consists of an AABBA pattern.
We also discussed proverbs and their meaning.A proverb is a short saying that gives you some advice. Here are some examples of proverbs we discussed:
- Many hands make light work
- People in glass houses should not throw stones
- Where there’s a will, there’s a way
- Actions speak louder than words
- Don’t judge a book by its cover
- Hunger is the best sauce

We had so much fun during Seachtain na Gaeilge we enjoyed learning a
Frása an Lae. Each day a student was awarded Gaeilgeoir an Lae. We loved creating stalls for the Pop-up Gaeltacht and it was a huge success. We completed a whole school Tráth na gCeist and the children tool part in Lá Glas where they wore a green item of clothing for the day.
Maths
In maths we learned about lines and angles, directed numbers, decimals and percentages.
We learned about and labelled all the different angles including; acute, obtuse, right, straight and reflex angles. We identified different types of angles in the classroom. We also learned how to use our protractor to measure angles. The class worked in groups and explore the sum of the angles in a triangle which always adds up to 180°.
In decimals and percentages, we used dienes blocks and other concrete materials to explore decimals. We learned how to convert fractions and decimals and much more.
When exploring directed the numbers we learn that temperature is measured in degrees, freezing point is below 0° and boiling point is100°. We also learn how to count positive and negative numbers. We used examples such as floors in an office building and sea level to learn about directed numbers.
Other subjects:
Art:
In art we used pointillism to create beautiful spring images, We also made 3D daisies using strips of paper. The children used clay to create Easter baskets these were then decorated using paint. We created very impressive spring flowers with markers and used tinfoil to print. 5th Class created lovely jellyfish images using paint and chalk.
SESE:
In SESE we have learned about the EU, Optical Illusions, The Sun and The French Revolution. We learned about the countries in Europe and created interesting projects on a country of our choice. We then presented these to our class. We also studied the 1798 rebellion. We learned about Fr. Murphy and the Battle of Arklow. It was very interesting to learn about our local history.
We went on a Spring Walk with Patrick Hunt to Glenart wood. He was very interesting and taught us all about our local plant species and wildlife.
SPHE:
This term we completed the Stay Safe programme. We also learned about making decisions, responsibilities and choices.
PE:
In PE we really enjoyed learning new skills when playing unihockey. We are also exploring dance each week which is so much fun. Some children are attending swimming lessons each week.
Ciara from Ms. O’Loughlin’s class has written an account of our swimming lessons so far:
In Ms O’Loughlin’s class we have been doing lots, one of the amazing things we have been doing is swimming. Every Monday we get to go on a big bus with Ms Wolohan’s class. It's so much fun after not being able to go for so long. We get changed and hop into the pool for an hour-long swimming lesson. Its great we all have so much fun. Afterwards we quickly get changed and jump back on the bus to school. We were supposed to start swimming in 3rd class, but Covid-19 restrictions wouldn't allow it. After not being able to do anything for so long, I think everyone enjoys it twice as much. I think, I speak for everyone when I say I can’t wait for next Monday.
Keep up the great work 5th Class.
