5th Class News February

The 5th class pupils of St. John’s SNS have continued to work hard by completing school work through Google Classroom this February. Take a look below at what they have been learning all about!

We have continued to enjoy our guided reading books through the month of February.

We are now well into our novels and getting a good grasp on the plot and the characters. Take a look at some of the novels we are currently reading in 5th class!

Our comprehension strategy for January is the skill of determining importance.

Determining importance means that a good reader focuses on what’s most important in the text so that they can develop deeper meaning and overall understanding of the text. Proficient readers are able to decide, from everything on the page, what is most important to remember.

This month we continued to study recount writing. From studying and learning about recount writing the past few weeks we were finally ready to write our own!

We planned our own recounts using a recount scaffold as a guide for the structure. We made sure we included a title, introduction(orientation), paragraphs and conclusion! We made sure to use time connectives when starting each paragraph.

The following poster shows main elements of a recount piece of writing which we included in our own wriitng!

Oral Language

Recounting events has also been the focus in our oral language. Retelling events that happened using all the features of our recount written text.

These included the following:
