5th class - January/February news

5th Class got the year off to a great start with their fantastic work across all subject areas!

English:

Reading:

In 5th class we have been practicing the strategies of questioning , connecting and predicting in guided reading. We have also been reading examples of reports to identify features of this writing genre which inspires and informs our own writing.

Oral Language:

We have been watching reports on animals by the National Geographic 101 and discussed our new findings and observations. We have shared oral reports in class on animals which we have researched.

Writing:

We have been planning, writing and editing reports. This involved gathering information and organising it into different sections of our report. Report writing was an enjoyable and interesting genre for 5th class to work on.

Poetry: We studied the poem ‘Danny Murphy’ by James Stephens.

Gaeilge:

Bhíomar ag staideár ‘An Aimsir’ ‘An Geimhreadh’ agus ‘An tEarrach’. Bhíomar ag foghlaim focail nua agus frásaí leis na topaicí sin.

Úsáideamar na frásaí seo a leans I rith an mí:

  • Cén séasúr atá ann anois? An geimhreadh atá ann anois.
  • Ainmnigh míonna an gheimhridh. Mí na Samhna, Mí na Nollag agus Eanáir.
  • Cén mhí atá ann anois? Mí na ___ atá ann anois.
  • Cén dáta atá ann inniu? An tríochadú lá de Mhí na ____atá ann inniu.
  • Cén saghas aimsire a bhíonn ann sa gheimhreadh/ An TÉarrach? Bíonn an aimsir fliuch sa gheimhreadh. Bíonn sé ag clagarnach báistí.
  • An maith leat an geimhreadh/ An téarrach? Is maith liom an geimhreadh / an tÉarrach.
  • Is breá leis na páistí an t-earrach mar bíonn an geimhreadh fada thart. Bíonn an aimsir ag dul i bhfeabhas san earrach. Bíonn an ghrian ag taitneamh. Bíonn néalta boga bána sa spéir. Téann na páistí ag siúl faoin tuath.

Bíonn an feirmeoir an-ghnóthach san earrach. Bíonn sé ag obair go dian dícheallach. Bíonn sé ag treabhadh na páirce. Feiceann na páistí ainmhithe óga. Feiceann siad bó agus lao óg. Feiceann siad capall agus searrach. Feiceann siad muc agus banbh. Feiceann siad caora agus uan. Feiceann siad madra agus coileán. Feiceann siad cat agus puisín. Feiceann siad gabhar agus mionnán.

Bhíomar ag obair ar an gramadach seo a leanas:

  • Briathra a thosnaíonn le guta (Grúpa a Dó) san A.C
  • Ag comhaireamh (2 - 6) + séimhiú (7 - 10) + úrú : éan amháin, dhá éan, trí éan, ceithre éan, cúig éan, sé éan, seacht n-éan, ocht n-éan, naoi n-éan, deich n-éan

Maths:

In Maths this term we continued our work on the topic of Fractions.

We learned how to:

  • compare and order fractions and identify equivalent forms of fractions with denominators 2-12
  • express improper fractions as mixed numbers and vice versa and position them on a number line
  • add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers
  • divide a whole number by a unit fraction
  • multiply a fraction by a whole number
  • express tenths, hundredths and thousandths in both fractional and decimal form

We started learning our division tables each week.

Other Subject Areas:

Our SESE topic of weather and clouds integrated nicely with our Irish themes and Art for January and February. In Art we created paintings of umbrellas, rainbows and also constructed flowers out of paper. In PE we have been playing Soccer and practicing our passing and striking skills in drills and games. In History we learned about the Renaissance and the talented, famous people from that Era such a Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci and Galileo. We also examined the history of the Aztecs and created artwork inspired by the Aztec’s worship of the sun.

Well done to the 5th class students for their hard work and positive attitude in January and February.

Ms O Loughlin, Ms Fennell. Mr O Connor, Ms Wolohan.
