6th Class November News

30th November 2020

6th Class are trooping towards the finish line of this term with lots more learning under their belt. It seems this year, that the anticipation of Christmas is even more intense than ever and we are beginning to feel that lovely, warm, festive glow already in our hearts and mind. Most of the classes already have Christmas trees up and have been enjoying looking at all the new TV Christmas adverts together and recognising the importance of family time and being together, more so than gift.

In English reading two classes are coming to the end of their class novels Kensuke’s Kingdom , The Wreck of Zanzibar and Bridge to Teribithia . The other two classes are still focussing on reading information texts as am important preparation for secondary school. They looked at the lives of pioneering Mahatma Gandi and Nelson Mandela. They continued to make more connections as part of their reading strategies.

They have moved onto narrative writing and along with reading some fantastic story books such as “The Day the Crayons Quit” , they have penned their own orientations and are looking forward to delving into the development of characters and how to bring a story to a successful conclusion in narrative writing . In discovering narrative writing they developed their language by working on synonyms and antonyms and finding more descriptive language to upskill their stories .

The children have brought the knowledge they learnt about fractions forward and are now relating it to decimals and fractions and really using it to understand real life maths such as the percentage discounts on Black Friday and how to work out sale prices and also prices of items with tax.

In science they took part in fantastic experiments at home for Science week . We had a runner up for Ms. Riley's competition for the best experiment Ms. Fleming's class , so well done to Sajeevi who impressed with his experiment on materials and change . They learnt about gravity , friction and forces and air resistance and the classes made their own versions of parachutes .

They were thrilled to welcome Barney back to train them in rugby. Unfortunately, the weather went against them the first two weeks but the fun restarted last week and screams of laughter could be heard as Barney is always a great hit with every class.

We also remembered all family members in the month or remembrance and prayed for them in particular .

Mr. O’Luasaigh extended his family, with the addition to two beautiful healthy twin girls who arrived safely thank God. And we would really like to wish Ms. Sheehan well, as she departs on maternity leave this month.
