Well done to all of the 3rd Class children on settling in so well to St. John's S.N.S., Arklow!
Here is an overview of everything we have learned this month:
English
Reading: We have been learning to make predictions while we are reading. It is important to make predictions before we read, during our reading and after our reading. We know that we need to use the blurb, pictures and title to help us make our predictions. We made predictions before, during and after reading "The Silver Swan" by Michael Morpurgo and "A Bad Case of Stripes" by David Shannon. We know that by making predictions it will help us with our reading.
Writing: This month we have been working on the genre of Recount Writing. We have listened to and read examples of recounts in class such as "The Family Picnic" and "Lemons for Mrs. Townsend." We have enjoyed identifying the different features of a piece of Recount Writing.
The structure for a piece of Recount Writing is:
- Title
- Orientation-Who? Where? Why?
- Events
- Ending
We are looking forward to writing our own recount pieces in the coming weeks!
Oral Language: We have identified how we can be a good listener and a good speaker both in class and at home e.g. facing the person who is speaking to us and speaking clearly when it is our turn to do so. Our topic for the month of September has been "Transport" and we have enjoyed discussing the advantages and disadvantages of having a car, how transport has changed over the years and what transport may be like in the future.
Maths
We have spent the month of September revising Place Value and Addition. We have enjoyed using our mini-whiteboards for revision purposes and to try out additional challenges! This month has seen us counting in 2's to prepare us for learning our X2 tables. The teachers are so proud of how hard the children in 3rd Class are working to learn their tables. Well done! We have given ourselves an additional challenge at attempting word problems as well! We've enjoyed playing number games in class to help cement our learning!

Other subjects
In our history lessons, we discovered what timelines are and how they can be used. We identified a variety of timelines e.g. pictorial timelines, timelines of well-known people and timelines of major historical events that happened in the past. We even made our own timelines!
In our P.E. lessons we are enjoying being outdoors. We have been practicing our sprinting and relays.
Take a look at the photographs to see how creative we are in 3rd Class!
Well done to all of the 3rd Class children and keep up the great work for the coming months!!
