6th class have been working so hard since returning to school.

Here is an overview of everything we have been learning this month:

We are learning how to make predictions while we read. Good readers make predictions before, during and after reading. We have been using titles, pictures and blurbs to make our predictions. Sometimes, we can confirm that our predictions were correct and other times, we have to adjust our predictions slightly once we have read the story/text.

We have read some very interesting stories over the past few weeks from our class reader and look forward to starting reading novels or informational texts next month!

6th class have been getting stuck into the genre of Persuasive Writing this month and we have had some fantastic (and occasionally heated!) discussions and debates. We began by studying persuasive language in advertising before moving onto speeches and debates. The children have thoroughly enjoyed writing their own arguments following the structure of a Persuasive Writing text.

The structure of a piece of Persuasive Writing includes:

  • Title
  • Brief overview
  • Reasons/Arguments
  • Conclusion

Oral Language:

We are putting our persuasive language to the test in a fun game called ‘persuade me’. In this oral language game, students are given a topic card and have just 30 seconds to persuade their audience to agree with their side of a statement.

Some examples of topics we have enjoyed discussing are:

  • The school day should not be longer.
  • Mobile phones are necessary.
  • All children should get pocket money.
  • Dogs are better pets than cats.
  • The Xbox is the best invention ever made.

6th class worked extremely hard learning about place value and how to interpret and record data in the first few weeks back to school. We analysed bar charts, multiple bar charts, trend graphs and pie charts. We had great fun gathering data from our classmates and presenting this information using various graphs.

We have moved onto learning about fractions in our maths lessons, exploring equivalent fractions, adding fractions and simplifying fractions.

Other subjects

In our history lessons, we have been learning all about the Celts. We experienced what it would be like writing as the Celts would have written, using an alphabet known as the Ogham alphabet and writing from the bottom of the page to the top. The Celts also inspired our art lessons where we used coloured paper to create Celtic knot designs. In our PE lessons, we have been working hard to improve our sprinting, relay races, javelin throwing and jumping.

Take a look at the pictures below to see a selection of this fabulous work!

Keep up the great work 6th class :)
