The 5th class students of St. John's SNS have been very busy in May.
Here is an quick overview of what we have learned in May:
English:
We have continued learning the genre of procedural writing. The children have gained more confidence and understand both the structure and language features of a procedural text. The children worked in small groups to sequence correctly and procedural text and they are now ready to write their own pieces!
The children have played barrier games to help improve their oral language and listening skills. Here children had to tell and follow instructions to complete the activity. The children were very successful in doing this.
The children are getting close to the end of their guided reading books. The reading strategy that the children have focused on in May was 'visualisation'. Below are some of the activities the children completed on visualisation.
- Draw images in response to guided reading
- Create mental images in response to guided reading
- Discuss in detail the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touch of their image
- Compare own image to others
Maths:
The children have moved onto learning about decimals and percentages. Last month the children learned all about fractions and their knowledge of fractions has helped greatly when grasping both decimals and percentages.
Some of the activities the children have completed are:
- Using dienes blocks and other concrete materials to explore decimals
- Learning how to convert fractions and decimals and express them as percentages.
- Using the notation board to highlight the relationship between the digits and obvious pattern between amounts written as decimals and percentages
- Use 100 squares to represent percentages, given its decimal and fraction.

Other subject areas:
The classes practiced some basketball skills in PE.
We explored the history of World War 1 and learned about rocks and soils in Geography.
We learned about artist Keith Haring in Art and created art work inspired by him and we looked at optical illusions and made some of our own!
